Following the successful launch of Restaurant Hjem, the brief for this project was to completely reimagine the adjoining hotel’s dated entrance lounge into a sophisticated drinks lounge and reception area. The objective was to elevate the space to meet the expectations of destination diners, while firmly protecting the old-school, rural charm of a classic country inn. The resulting design leans into atmospheric drama, creating a rich sensory prelude to the Michelin-starred dining experience that awaits just beyond the threshold.

The dramatic, moody ambiance stands in intentional contradiction to the bright, minimalist Scandinavian dining room hidden behind the curtain. We colour drenched the space in a rich dark blue hue which creates an intimate quality and provides a perfect backdrop against which the rich burnt orange and antique gold accents sing. By painting out the window frames in this same deep tone, the view of rolling Northumbrian hills is transformed into a piece of living art that changes with the seasons.

To maximise spatial flow and capacity, we designed a bespoke curved leather banquette and custom reception desk. Tailored shelving displays eclectic, traditional decor and provides log storage for the roaring open fire with its repointed exposed stone surround - anchoring the room in authentic British heritage.
