Following an extensive redesign and refurbishment, The Spotted Dog was transformed from a dilapidated village pub into a vibrant, modern gastropub and wedding venue. The brief was to bring a touch of city sophistication to the countryside, all while preserving and enhancing the familiar rustic charm of the Great British country pub.

By replacing an oppressive, fragmented layout with an open and functional flow, the space now effortlessly accommodates everything from casual drinks to private dining and weddings. The design balances a playful, contemporary aesthetic with classic British design details that gracefully honour the building’s original character. Low, dingy ceilings were raised and vaulted, exposed beams were reintroduced, and original stone walls and roaring fireplaces were uncovered and restored to their former glory.

Custom fluted banquette seating and rich soft furnishings were paired with warm antique brass and fluted glass detailing, offering a sophisticated contrast to the building's rugged historic bones. The standout feature of the project was an ancient 30ft well unearthed during early demolition; rather than covering it back over, it was transformed into a striking, glazed design feature in the centre of the space. This meticulous attention to detail even extended to the unexpected and often-forgotten customer toilets, which feature bold colour palettes and geometric tiling - ensuring every corner of the historic building was intentionally considered.
