RESTAURant hjem

Opened in 2019 and tucked inside a quaint, traditional country hotel, Restaurant Hjem brings world-class fine dining to the rugged Northumbrian hills. An homage to the owners' shared roots, Hjem is both the Swedish and Northumbrian word for "home"—which is exactly how the space feels. Despite earning Northumberland’s first Michelin star shortly after opening, the 24-seat restaurant completely rejects typical fine-dining pretension, combining an elite culinary experience with the warmth of dining among friends.

The design embodies a Scandinavian "hygge" sensibility, focusing on a minimalist aesthetic that remains incredibly warm and inviting. Circular tables are used intentionally to encourage conversation, while soft ambient lighting and natural materials keep the crisp space feeling grounded and intimate.

Reflecting the restaurant's locally sourced and foraged menu, the interiors place a heavy emphasis on regional artistry, featuring warm wood textures, locally curated artwork, and bespoke handmade tableware. At the heart of the original room is a beautiful open kitchen, turning the structural layout into an immersive experience.

In 2021, the footprint was expanded to include a new private dining room and an accessible WC. This extension features a striking, custom-built chef’s table and stunning dried floral arrangements composed entirely of edible plants. Complete with sweeping views over the valley and a seamless connection to the patio and beautiful garden, the addition deepens the restaurant's quiet, nature-led aesthetic.
